Self-Discipline? What about Self-Devotion?

framed board with a motivational slogan on a yellow wall

The only thing that stands in the way between what you want and what you have now are the deep-seated beliefs you have about whether you truly deserve it. Read that again.

We can all admit there are aspects of our lives in which we could implement more discipline, right? Instead of shaming ourselves for that, let’s look at it a different way.

The word “discipline” feels hard. It implies we have to force ourselves to do something uncomfortable.

While we know it’s for our greater good, looking at a task through the eyes of discipline shifts our energy into this stubborn and resistant place where giving up is the more desirable option.

We TRY through gritted teeth to use will power and make a different choice. It gets hard. We get “the fuck-its,” and surrender to the comforting yet self-sabotaging behavior we know we want to change. We feel that shame again. Rinse, repeat.

Sometimes simply shifting the words and perspective about a situation can help us understand or overcome an obstacle.

Let me introduce an idea that might help you see the situation differently:

Rather than self-discipline, we practice self-devotion.

Self-devotion is the commitment of love towards our inner Divinity, the God or Goddess within. It exalts our higher self and uses every action as a vote for that higher self.

Self-devotion says, “I am committed to my greatest possible health so that I can serve and connect with the highest level of consciousness available to me at this time.”

In order for Spirit to be at the steering wheel of our human experience, we know we must choose the best nourishment for ourselves. Consider the following areas of life that affect our connection to Source:

  • Nutrition

Are you giving your body the proper food and hydration it needs to perform at its best?
Are you taking in enough nutrients throughout the day to support a strong body and mind? Is it possible you are over-indulging?
Are you eating or drinking because you genuinely want to, or are you doing it to fit in?
  • Relationships

Do you surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you? (outside of work)
Do you allow yourself to be vulnerable with the people in your life? Others with you?
Do you feel comfortable sharing your needs with others, even if that means taking space?
Do you choose dynamics that might feel heavy or toxic?
Do you feel safe around the people in your life?
  • Activities

Do you choose recreational habits and activities that inspire your creativity?
Are you engaging in these activities because you genuinely want to?
  • Personal Integrity

Are you impeccable with your word?
Do you follow through with your commitments?
    Do you have firm boundaries?
Are you able to communicate your needs and respect others’?
Do you lie, gossip or make violence with your words?
Are you honest with yourself about how you behave?
Are you able to say no to things that do not serve you?
  • Physical Health

Do you feel connected to your body’s health and internal processes?
Are you moving your body each day?
Are you engaging in activities that maintain or strengthen your current level of fitness?
Are you in touch with your natural cycles of sleep, digestion, menstruation, hunger/thirst, etc?

Perhaps you’ve found one or more categories you desire growth. Pick ONE you’ll focus on for the next ten days.

Remember, the patterns and people that currently exist in your life are there because you feel deserving of them, either passively or actively.

Here are some questions that may help you understand the underlying challenges you’ve faced in achieving change in the past.

Ask yourself,

1. What behavior do I want to change?

2. Could there be a part of me that doesn’t feel like I deserve to have the result of this change?

3. Is it possible that having the result of this change could threaten the ways that I feel safe?

Write your reflections in a journal and take some moments to welcome any difficult emotions or resistance around this topic.

These types of changes don’t happen overnight. That’s why I want to create a FREE community activity to engage in collective support and accountability for each individual’s process… and to have fun too!

Ten days. One commitment.

Will you answer the call? Will you participate in this act of self-care?

We start our 10 Day Self-Devotion Challenge on Monday, November 13 with a community Whatsapp chat where people can leave messages, videos, and support each other in between the demands of our busy schedules.

Drop me an email or send me a DM to join our group, and I’ll provide you with more information about how and when we’ll connect!
